A link between Savoy and Piedmont

The Fréjus road tunnel, opened in 1980 and 12,87 km long, is located at the junction of two major regional and international transport routes linking France and Italy. A link between Savoie and Piedmont, it is now one of the main road crossings in the Northern Alps. It consists of a single, two-way tube carrying two traffic lanes.

The Fréjus Tunnel is designed to accommodate heavy goods vehicles, with a maximum height of 4,30 meters. A single tube accommodates two traffic lanes of 3,55 meters. The French and Italian entrances are located at similar altitudes, at 1 and 228 meters respectively. The longitudinal profile has a slight gradient of 1% in the France-Italy direction.
