Are winter tyres mandatory ?

There is no legal obligation in France, however, you are strongly advised to equip your vehicle with specialised tyres/equipment in winter. Be aware: if you are going to North Italy, there are regions where specialised tyres/equipment are mandatory during the winter season (snow chains in your car boot or winter tyres from November 21st to April 21st).

Is it possible to pay the toll with "chèques vacances" (French holiday vouchers) ?

"Chèques Vacances" are not accepted in payment for the A43 Maurienne motorway: however, it is possible to buy a "LiberT Vacances" automatic toll "TAG" with "chèque vacances".

"Chèques Vacances" are accepted in payment for the Fréjus Tunnel tolls, but only on the French platform: go directly to a toll payment booth (a green arrow indicates that the booth is open) and ask the toll agent in the booth.

I would like to buy a subscription for 8-20 or 30 Fréjus tunnel crossings: how do I do so ?

When you reach the tunnel, go directly to a toll payment booth and ask the toll agent in the booth. (toll payment booths at the tunnel are always manned).

I would like to recharge my 8-20 or 30 Fréjus tunnel crossings subscription: how do I do so ?

When the balance on your travel pass drops to 3 crossings, it is possible to recharge the pass at the toll booth, as long as the pas sis still valid.

My 8, 20 or 30 Fréjus tunnel crossings subscription has expired: what should I do ?

In compliance with the terms and conditions of use for your travel pass, any crossings remaining on a travel pass which has expired are lost; no action is possible.

Can the vehicle following me use my 8, 20 or 30 Fréjus tunnel crossings subscription ?

No, the travel pass cannot be used for 2 or more vehicles following each other: there must be an interval of 6 hours between each use of the travel pass.

I have a category 1 subscription and I want to use the tunnel with a category 2: is this possible ?

It is possible to change a category 1 travel pass to use a category 2 vehicle: a surcharge will be calculated on the basis of the number of category 1 crossings remaining on the travel pass, and the travel pass will be changed to a category 2 pass.
Your subscription will then be category 2, enabling you to use vehicles of category 1 or 2, without further surcharges.

Are toll charges the same on the Italian platform ?

Toll charges are different because the rate of VAT in Italy is 22%; charges are therefore slightly higher.

Are vehicle categories the same on the motorways and at the tunnel ?

Classification criteria at the tunnel are different from those on the motorways: the height of the vehicle, its height from the front axle and the number of axles are taken into account at the tunnel. This explains why a motor home may be in category 3 or 4 on the motorways and in category 2 at the tunnel, or a vehicle may be category 1 on the motorways and category 2 at the tunnel.
