SOS alarm buttons every 20 m, in addition to 100 emergency telephones every 265 m, enable users to contact the Control room to report an incident. Two extinguishers are available to users in each safety booth to intervene at the outbreak of fire.
To date, 17 safety shelters on the French side are operational and linked to the emergency gallery. The safety shelters for the Italian side go into service as they are excavated and equipped. They are protected by a smoke proof fire door (2 h). They are equipped with an independent air supply, not connected to the tunnel ventilation system. Inside each shelter there is a telephone connected to the Control room, a video link, and a poster displaying instructions on what to do in several languages. All the shelters are linked to a fresh air duct which also doubles as an escape route for users.
