Since December 1999 the IGC is supported by a safety committee made up of French and Italian experts in tunnel safety.
The safety committee is in charge of issuing an opinion on improvement work carried out in the Fréjus tunnel and on its operating procedures, as well as on any “one-off” events likely to impact safety. The safety committee must also be kept informed of any incidents and/or accidents which arise during operation of the tunnel.
The companies consult the Safety Committee and then the IGC on any safety related issues.
The chair of the safety committee changes every year. France chairs the safety committee when the IGC is chaired by an Italian, and Italy chairs the safety committee when the IGC is chaired by someone French. Currently, the head of the Italian delegation for the committee is Pasquale CIALDINI, and the head of the French delegation is Daniel CHEMIN.
